IFEMA implements the best Wi-Fi in Spain

WIFI Ifema

IFEMA has taken an ambitious project on board to renovate its entire Wi-Fi infrastructure, which will be activated this October. It is a major project whose total investment stands at €3.4 million, and which represents the best WIFI network ever installed in Spain. Its installation has made it possible to provide IFEMA’s facilities with a state-of-the-art Wi-Fi connection in all commercial areas, which total more than 230,000 square metres.

With this, the institution will be able to offer its trade fair visitors free connection to the network, with the possibility of increasing the range of services to its exhibiting companies who require wireless installations to conduct their business.

The installation, which will connect up all areas of the site for the more than 3.5 million visitors who come annually to Feria de Madrid, has involved some impressive figures: more than 1,100 access points and 2,000 aerials installed, or 90 kilometres of multimode fibre optics and wiring. This is large-scale infrastructure that currently supports more than 64,000 simultaneous connections and up to 100,000 in the future, figures that double the maximum number of concurrent users reached currently at key technology events such as the Mobile World Congress.

The project posed an important organizational and logistical challenge, with an investment of more than 16,000 hours of work over a limited period of time. For this project, CISCO technology has been used with access points for the Aironet 3800 series, which support the most advanced Wi-Fi standard, (802.11ac Wave 2 MU-MIMO). This technology allows each connection rate to reach up to 5.2 Gbps, almost 4 times more than the previous 802.11ac technology.

For the installation of the new WIFI network, IFEMA has allocated a total of €3.4 million, as part of the global investment plan for 2018, which includes a total of €25 million. The project has been developed in parallel with the installation of the high security system for automated control of all accesses to its premises, as well as the new emergency public address system, with an investment of €5 million. In total over the next 5 years, the Strategic Plan for IFEMA foresees an investment of €100 million for improvement and infrastructure equipment, communications, digitization and security.

The new Wi-Fi network currently supports more than 64,000 simultaneous connections and up to 100,000 in the future.
